RACE TO LEAD: Confronting the Nonprofit Racial Leadership Gap
The nonprofit sector is experiencing a racial leadership gap. The percentage of people of color in the executive director/CEO role has remained under 20% for at least the past 15 years. This workshop will examine the causes of this disparity. The first part of the workshop will present the results of the Race to Lead survey of over 4,000 nonprofit staffers that found people of color had the same education and training as white respondents; however, the majority of respondents across race identified systemic barriers and biases preventing people of color from advancing into leadership roles. We will also present a framework on how to think about an organizational change to move forward. The second part of the workshop will offer strategies and examples of how organizations can ensure that their policies, practices, and culture are aligned with the values of diversity, inclusion, and equity. This will include an interactive piece in order to hear and learn from the workshop participants.
