The Building Movement Project is pleased to announce the appointment of Janis Rosheuvel as Executive Director, effective September 16, 2024. Rosheuvel will lead all aspects of BMP’s work to provide insightful research, practical resources, and pathways for transformative relationships that support nonprofit organizations, networks, and movements.
Rosheuvel brings a wealth of experience in advancing racial and social justice in the US and globally. Most recently, she served as a key program director at Solidaire, a major donor network moving money to progressive social movements, where she oversaw funding initiatives during the first five years of her tenure. At Solidaire she helped to raise and move over $40M to movement organizations working on a range of intersectional issues.
She has also served as executive secretary for racial justice with United Methodist Women (now United Women in Faith). She is and is the former executive director of Families for Freedom, a New York-based national anti-deportation organizing center. Janis was a Fulbright fellow to South Africa and a lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where she helped her students understand and grapple with the criminalization of migrant life. Her early career experiences included leading campaigns and local and national coalition-building on issues such as ending the criminalization of migrant communities, resisting Islamophobia, and ensuring reparations for Indigenous peoples.
“We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Janis Rosheuvel as the next Executive Director of the Building Movement Project”, said founder and outgoing Co-Executive Director, Frances Kunreuther. “Her visionary leadership and extensive background in organizing, nonprofit sector organizations, and movement building makes her an exceptional choice to lead the Building Movement Project now and into the future.” Outgoing Co-Executive Director Sean Thomas-Breitfeld added, “This transition is obviously an important first for BMP, and we are thrilled that Janis comes to us with such powerful leadership experience that will enable her to hit the ground running.”
Rosheuvel will lead BMP’s current initiatives designed to confront racial and generational gaps in the sector, build the capacity of organizations to advance systems change, and support initiatives to strengthen movement infrastructure for the long term.Â
“Janis’ entire career has been dedicated to doing deep work alongside people most impacted by systemic harms. Not only will she bring wide-ranging relationships with movement leaders, philanthropy, and donor communities, but she possesses a particular conviction and point of view about what it means to drive strategies that are responsive to growing threats to democracy, rising authoritarianism, and backlashes to racial equity gains,” said David McKinney, of the BMP Advisory Board and executive search committee.

Janis holds a BA in International Studies from the American University’s School of International Service and an MA in Conflict Resolution from the University of Bradford in England. Under Janis’ leadership, the Building Movement Project looks forward to entering its next chapter.
