The Building Movement Project is excited to announce the addition of two new members to our Project Team! Dushaw Hockett and Andrea Plaza will begin their tenures on the team this month, though they have already been contributing to Building Movement Project work. Most recently, Andrea has been one of the leaders on a project in New Mexico exploring how service providers and community organizing groups can collaborate for social change. Dushaw has been working with fellow Team member Linda Campbell in Detroit on how to strengthen organizing and leadership.establishing a vibrant black/brown alliance across communities and strengthening leadership in the city.
Both Andrea and Dushaw bring extraordinary experience and insight to the team., Andrea is the Executive Director of Encuentro, an innovative Latino immigrant organization in Albuquerque, New Mexico that uses community collaborations to create programs and services that build immigrant leadership and civic engagement. Before heading Encuentro, Andrea worked with immigrant women on an innovative project using microenterprise development and social enterprise as a way to teach skills and provide incomes. Dushaw works as Executive Director of SPACEs—Safe Places for the Advancement of Community and Equity. SPACEs is a leadership development and community building organization that works with people and groups to bridge the gap between vision and impact. He is the former Director of Special Initiatives at Center for Community Change (CCC).
In her own words, Andrea describes how she came to learn about the Project, and why she’s excited about joining the team, “I am truly honored to have been asked to join the BMP team. I learned about BMP’s work many years ago when Robby Rodriguez hosted a book signing for the publication of Working Across Generations, a book that delves into issues of leadership – its demands, rewards and challenges – all experiences that I am currently facing in my relatively new role as Director of an immigrant based non-profit in New Mexico. BMP’s philosophy around collaboration and connecting service to social justice work resonates strongly with my own work.”
Dushaw spoke about the values of the BMP team, adding “I’m honored to be part of a team of people who still believe in the world as it should be.”
