Between July and September 2024, the Asian Law Caucus (ALC) and the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA), in partnership with Aurora Commons and the Building Movement Project, developed and convened 2024 elections scenario planning conversations for organizations working closely with Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities.
Across three scenario planning sessions, approximately 130 staff from 73 different organizations came together to understand and anticipate potential legal and policy shifts, and prepare for the lead up to and aftermath of the 2024 presidential election.
Participants represented a wide range of movement work, including direct services, law and policy, base building and organizing, and narrative change. Together, they discussed policy challenges and opportunities across the wide range of core issues represented by participants, including immigration, health, education, and national security.
For ALC and NCAPA, these sessions represent an important bridge between local and national expertise, a model which we hope to replicate through additional post-election coordination and collaboration. To support our work moving forward, ALC, NCAPA, Aurora Commons, and Building Movement Project have summarized the three scenario planning sessions and key recommendations from participants, including on how to build cross-movement solidarity, provide community education, protect physical and digital safety, build legal defense infrastructure, invest in rapid response infrastructure, and secure organizational operations and resources, among others.
The Building Movement Project has also developed a toolkit with worksheets and exercises to support scenario planning for other organizations, networks, and coalitions. To learn more about this scenario planning series, please contact the Asian Law Caucus.
