SUMMARY:Different Leadership Structures: Looking to the Future of Nonprofit Leadership
DESCRIPTION:How will nonprofit leadership and organizations look in the future? As the leadership of nonprofit organizations changes during the next decade\, there will be a tremendous opportunity to stop and think about what this sector should look like in the future. And as is the case in individual leadership transitions\, we have an opportunity to begin to make the needed\, and sometimes difficult\, changes that prepare us for that future. What will that mean for your organization? And\, how can you prepare for your nonprofit’s future leadership? Join us for a webinar presented by Caroline McAndrews and Frances Kunreuther\, two of the authors of Structuring Leadership: Alternative models for distributing power and decision-making in nonprofit organizations\, as they share examples of organizations practicing shared leadership and lessons for how to apply these practices in your own organization.

SUMMARY:What Works: Strategies for Building Strong Multi-generational Foundations with Caroline McAndrews
DESCRIPTION:Many foundations are now contending with four generations at work\, which can lead to conflict as opportunities for growth become more limited. At the same time\, programs that increase employee skills\, leadership options\, and ultimately satisfaction have been cut\, and employees are looking to move on. Further\, as tension grows\, important lessons can be lost. Based on a national survey and case studies\, this interactive session will explore the types of organizations and leadership needed – across generations –to make significant social change\, as well as the policies and practices that promote shared learning and decision-making.

SUMMARY:Counting Us Out? Why Everyone Should Care about the Census Undercount
DESCRIPTION:Demos will host an expert panel discussion on the 2010 decennial census count and its implications for residents (citizens and non-citizens alike) and communities all around the nation. This event coincides with U.S. Census workers beginning their outreach and efforts to reach the nation’s nearly 12 million undocumented immigrants which has already raised concerns over whether there will be an accurate tally of immigrant residents\, both documented and undocumented. The interests of native-born residents are also served by the inclusion of non-citizens; census data affect policy decisions\, government funding levels\, and the political apportionment of congressional districts. Immigrant communities clearly have much at stake in ensuring that their members are fully counted. Why should citizens care about whether non-citizens are counted?

SUMMARY:Viral Sprial: How the Commoners Built a Digital Republic of Their Own
DESCRIPTION:Join Demos and the Building Movement Project for a forum with scholar and activist David Bollier about his new book\, Viral Spiral: How the Commoners Built a Digital Republic of Their Own. Bollier argues that during a period when the Bush Administration promoted privatization and brought digital policy innovation to a standstill\, the web was one of the few spaces where idealism and innovation could run free. Increased use of the internet\, and particularly web 2.0\, Bollier asserts\, has led to the creation of an alternative democratic polity – a parallel digital universe that honors such radical ideas as participation\, transparency\, and accountability.

SUMMARY:Democracy\, The Commons and the role of Nonprofits
DESCRIPTION:In light of the recent legislation targeting the legitimate educational and advocacy efforts of nonprofit organizations throughout the state\, we invite you to come to a discussion led by Kim Klein\, founder of the Grassroots Fundraising Journal\, about the history of nonprofits\, their relation to the tax code and the Commons and their relevance to a healthy vibrant democracy. Come to discuss how New Mexico’s nonprofits can think about these issues in a much larger way that helps us move beyond simply fighting this legislation and towards advocating for the all the rights nonprofits should enjoy\, given our role in society.
