SUMMARY:Southern California Grantmaker Presentation Race to Lead: The Racial Leadership Gap in the Golden State
DESCRIPTION:Southern California Grantmakers is pleased to partner with the Building Movement Project to discuss the findings from their recently released Race to Lead report which explores the nonprofit racial leadership gap in California. To view the report\, please click here.\nThe results call into question the common assumption that to increase the diversity of nonprofit leaders\, people of color need more training. The findings point to a new narrative. To increase the number of people of color leaders\, the nonprofit sector needs to address the practices and biases of those governing nonprofit organizations. Rather than focus on the perceived deficits of potential leaders of color\, the sector should concentrate on educating nonprofit decision-makers on the issues of race equity and implicit bias accompanied by changes in action leading to measurable results. SUMMARY:Integrating Social Change Principles into Service Provision
DESCRIPTION:During the “Integrating Social Change Principles into Service Provision” workshop at the 2018 Hunger Free Communities Summit\, the Building Movement Project will offer a framework for exploring (or understanding) the range of ways that social service organizations integrate their social change principles into their everyday work. Appetite for Change will offer a “living case study” of how these principles may be applied in a real and local context. The workshop will guide participants through an assessment of their organization’s activities based on a scale of constituent engagement. Through group and partner discussion\, as well as individual reflection\, workshop participants will consider aspirational organizational activities and map out possible next steps. Attendees will also learn from both Building Movement Projectand Appetite for Change about various types of power and how power dynamics play into service delivery work and efforts to integrate social change principals into that work. Attendees will leave with tangible resources for integrating meaningful constituent engagement\, wherever they may be in the process of advancing progressive social change.

DESCRIPTION:In June 2017\, the Building Movement Project released the first report in the Race to Lead series looking at why there are so few leaders of color in the nonprofit sector. The results of a survey of over 4\,000 people working in nonprofits clearly indicate that bias and structural barriers – rather than qualifications or aspirations – prevent people of color from advancement. This session will start with a quick review of the existing reports and new data\, followed by an interactive discussion with session participants on 1) their reactions and experiences\, 2) how the findings can influence practice\, and 3) what other information is needed for effective racial justice capacity building.

SUMMARY:Confronting the Nonprofit Racial Leadership Gap
DESCRIPTION:Leaders from Detroit and Los Angeles will discuss ways to address the nonprofit racial leadership gap. In 2017\, the Building Movement Project released a report\, Race to Lead: Confronting the Nonprofit Racial Leadership Gap\, that challenged prevailing narratives for why there are so few leaders of color in the nonprofit sector. Rather than the conventional deficit model — that People of Color were unable or unwilling to take on top leadership — the results from over 4\,000 nonprofit respondents showed People of Color and whites had similar qualifications and that People of Color were more likely to aspire to lead nonprofit organizations. Respondents also reported that structural barriers\, from white boards to biased executive recruiters to funders\, prevent People of Color from advancing to executive leadership jobs. During this session\, we will present survey results including national data\, data on the LGBTQ and California subsamples\, and a new analysis of the data by race and gender. Two presenters from the Detroit area and Los Angeles\, will briefly share their observations of the nonprofit racial leadership landscape and actions they are taking to change the narrative and to address the real barriers: racialized biases in the sector. In structured and highly interactive small groups\, audience members will be learn from the presenters and their peers about practical ways of changing the narrative and taking concrete steps to address the nonprofit racial leadership gap. DESCRIPTION:RACE TO LEAD: Confronting the Nonprofit Racial Leadership Gap\nThe nonprofit sector is experiencing a racial leadership gap. The percentage of people of color in the executive director/CEO role has remained under 20% for at least the past 15 years. This workshop will examine the causes of this disparity. The first part of the workshop will present the results of the Race to Lead survey of over 4\,000 nonprofit staffers that found people of color had the same education and training as white respondents; however\, the majority of respondents across race identified systemic barriers and biases preventing people of color from advancing into leadership roles. We will also present a framework on how to think about an organizational change to move forward.
