DESCRIPTION:Project Team member Helen Kim will be speaking at the Asian American Justice Center’s Advancing Justice Conference. This interactive session will examine issues related to generational change in leadership and building a multigenerational movement through case scenarios\, exercises\, presentation of examples and discussions. Drawing on the work done by the Building Movement Project and presented in Working Across Generations: Defining the Future of Nonprofit Leadership\, participants will learn about similarities and differences between generations of movement builders\, especially between those who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s and those in newer generations. The session will offer the opportunity to re-examine our current assumptions and relationships between generations as well as ideas to shift organizational culture and structure that can promote greater trust and more shared leadership across generations.

SUMMARY:The Commons: Why It Matters\, An Interactive Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Kim Klein is a member of the Building Movement Project and a Fellow with On the Commons. Kim has worked in nonprofit sector her entire career and believes that nonprofits have a critical role to play in the creation and maintenance of a democratic society. Her current work is focused on how nonprofits can protect “the commons”— what we all own (parks\, libraries\, the internet) or what cannot be owned (clean air\, wilderness\, fresh water). The commons must be preserved and passed down to future generations undamaged\, restored or enhanced\, and healthy nonprofits are fundamental to this work. Kim is well known as a fundraising trainer and consultant. She is a lecturer at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and the editor of the Kim Klein Fundraising Series at Jossey-Bass Publishers. She is the author of five books\, including Fundraising For Social Change (now in its 6th edition) and Reliable Fundraising in Unreliable Times\, which won the McAdam Book Award in 2010. She has a blog called Kim Klein and the Commons\, and is a staff member for a project called Nonprofits Talking Taxes.

SUMMARY:Leadership for Feminist Movement Building Panel
DESCRIPTION:Spark together with Stanford University’s Center for Philanthropy and Civil Society (PACS)\, Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research\, the Women’s Community Center and CDDRL’s Program on Social Entrepreneurship\, will co-host an intergenerational conversation to address questions around leadership within the next phase of the women’s movement including what is the women’s movement\, how the women’s movement operates and how we fund the women’s movement. DESCRIPTION:The budget crisis in California has heightened the need for all communities to build their civic capacity and to stay informed about the policy decisions that affect their lives. Direct service providers have enormous reach into communities that have been marginalized – including low-income and communities of color – but these groups do not always know how to advocate with their clients to solve more systemic problems. During this interactive session\, funders will be briefed on key findings from the report: Catalyst for Change: How California Nonprofits Can Deliver Services and Transform Communities\, commissioned by The California Endowment. Participants will hear directly from organizations that have made the transition from a direct service only approach to integrating client voice and advocacy into their work. SUMMARY:CONFR's Spring Conference: Celebrating 30 Years of Advancing Fundraising to Make Missions Happen
DESCRIPTION:There has been much written recently on the Leadership Deficit that may occur as Baby Boomers retire in the next five years. Nowhere is this concern more justified than in the nonprofit sector in New England\, whose leaders were instrumental in the spectacular growth of the sector in the 70’s and 80’s and are now reaching retirement age. What has not been written about is how leadership transitions could impact the financial sustainability of nonprofits in New Hampshire and beyond. Specifically\, how will major donors respond when their sole connection to an organization – whether it is the development director\, a board member\, or executive director – has packed up and moved to Florida? Will they lose their motivation to continue their support? Principle Presenter Frances Kunreuther\, Director of the Building Movement Project and writer and presenter on a variety of issues related to nonprofits\, leadership and social change\, will explore how organizations can transition staff and board members\, and their relationships with donors\, to a new generation of fundraisers. She will explain how to change the players without losing the dollars your organization needs today and in the future. The afternoon panel will be moderated by Stephen Reno of Leadership New Hampshire to explore how organizations can prepare holistically for transition so it is an ongoing process\, not a series of one-time events. SUMMARY:Detroit Accountable Community Governance Event
DESCRIPTION:In July\, 2012 William Copeland and Rayven Roberts represented EMEAC at the Accountable Community Governance Convening held by the South by Southwest Experiment in Jackson\, Mississippi. This event will serve as a community report back. But furthermore will be a discussion about what does Accountable Community Governance look like in Detroit. The South by Southwest Experiment is an inter-generational partnership initiated in 2006 by established grassroots social justice organizations: Southern Echo and the Mississippi Delta Catalyst Roundtable in Mississippi\, the Southwest Workers Union in Texas\, and the SouthWest Organizing Project in New Mexico. The ACG Convening had as its long term goal: The creation and implementation of an accountable community governance model through which grassroots communities and public officials can learn to work together to build fair\, just and healthy communities. By Governance\, we mean institutions that make policies that impact our lives. This includes government and elected officials but also includes civil society\, and grassroots organizations. Some topics that will be collectively discussed include: – Current Campaigns related to community governance including: the new city Charter\, PA4 and the Emergency Management Situation\, The Detroit School Board and its Emergency Management Situation\, the most recent Primary election and upcoming elections. – Detroit as a majority Black municipality- how does our governance meet or not meet our needs – How do organizations\, neighborhoods and activists work together? What is the role of youth? What relationships do we hold with elected officials and their staff/ administration? SUMMARY:Southern California Grantmaker Presentation Race to Lead: The Racial Leadership Gap in the Golden State
DESCRIPTION:Southern California Grantmakers is pleased to partner with the Building Movement Project to discuss the findings from their recently released Race to Lead report which explores the nonprofit racial leadership gap in California. To view the report\, please click here.\nThe results call into question the common assumption that to increase the diversity of nonprofit leaders\, people of color need more training. The findings point to a new narrative. To increase the number of people of color leaders\, the nonprofit sector needs to address the practices and biases of those governing nonprofit organizations. Rather than focus on the perceived deficits of potential leaders of color\, the sector should concentrate on educating nonprofit decision-makers on the issues of race equity and implicit bias accompanied by changes in action leading to measurable results. DESCRIPTION:A new examination of leadership opportunities and experiences for people of color in the Massachusetts nonprofit sector finds that\, despite the desire to create a more diverse sector\, nonprofits are falling short in providing opportunities to qualified leaders of color. The Nonprofit Leadership Gap in Massachusetts: A Race to Lead Brief\, was made possible through funding support by the Barr Foundation\, and was released today at a Boston Foundation event.
