Today we are launching the 2014 New Mexico Nonprofit Survey. This survey effort is being led by BMP, in partnership with many New Mexico nonprofits such as Albuquerque Health Care for the Homeless, Inc., Encuentro, Center for Nonprofit Excellence, New Mexico Voices for Children, and SouthWest Organizing Project. This short, confidential survey will ask all nonprofit organizations in New Mexico to tell us about their work, the communities they serve, and ways in which they work with other organizations and coalitions in the state.
If you are part of a New Mexico nonprofit, we encourage you to take the survey and share the survey link (bit.ly/NPSurveyNM) with your colleagues at other nonprofits.
Like many states across the country, New Mexico has been hit hard by the recent recession and many of the state’s key social services and programs have faced significant funding cuts during a time when demand for these resources has only increased. For instance, New Mexico lost $47 million in SNAP funding this year, a considerable decrease in food assistance for the nearly half a million people in the state who depend on this program. These are unprecedented challenge for the state’s highly engaged nonprofit organizations who have a strong history of community engagement and collaboration to support the common good.
The Building Movement Project has been supporting New Mexico nonprofit organizations as agents of social change. Last year, we surveyed service providers to find out how they were faring. We learned that many service providers were experiencing increased demand for their services and program but also decreased funding to provide these resources. In fact, more than half of survey respondents shared that they have needed to turn community members away for services due to a lack of capacity. This year’s survey results will be shared in a report to be released in early 2015 that will illuminate the current state of New Mexico’s nonprofit sector, including the key issues that nonprofits on working on, the shared opportunities and challenges they face, and how they can continue to work together to ensure the well-being of all New Mexicans.
