About the Building Movement Project

For over a decade, the Building Movement Project (BMP) (www.buildingmovement.org), a fiscally sponsored of TSNE MissionWorks (www.tsne.org), has been advancing the potential for nonprofit organizations to have an impact on building movements for progressive social change. We learn by listening to groups and leaders about what it takes for organizations to align their social justice principles with their operating practices. Our research and practical resources help organizations innovate to meet the needs of the communities they serve and face the challenges of the external environment. BMP concentrates on the following three main areas to accomplish our goals and advance social change:

  • Leadership: Analyzing how organizations can do their best work, encourage diverse leaders at every level, and promote the most effective and inclusive practices;
  • Service and Social Change: Developing the capacity of organizations to engage constituents in changing the systems that impact them;
  • Movement Building: Acknowledging and building on the distinct role of nonprofit organizations in advancing movements for social change.

Job Summary

We are seeking a full-time Research Analyst to join our small staff team, reporting to and working closely with BMP’s Senior Research Associate. The Analyst will work on our national projects focused on leadership, including our Race to Lead reports, service and social change (Tools to Engage), and movement building, as well as our place-based projects in Detroit, MI and New Mexico. The Building Movement Project is based in New York City.

The starting salary range is $55k to $65k, negotiable based on experience and with a commitment to equity within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct interviews and collect and summarize data from other sources (e.g. academic and popular literature);
  • Collaborate on the development of surveys, interview protocols, and other data collection tools;
  • Clean quantitative data;
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative data;
  • Summarize quantitative and qualitative data and interpret and make meaning of findings;
  • Produce graphs, charts and other forms of data visualization;
  • Write reports, memos, articles and blogs based on findings;
  • Manage project and task timelines for selected projects.

Qualifications

We will consider exceptional candidates who demonstrate a strong combination of the specific qualifications and skills described below.

  • Master’s Degree and at least two years of relevant work experience in a related field (experience may be substituted for additional education);
  • Strong quantitative analytical skills including data cleaning, analysis, visualization of findings and proven facility coding with software such as SPSS, Stata, R, etc.;
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills;
  • Qualitative research skills including conducting interviews and/or facilitating focus groups, and experience analyzing/coding qualitative data (familiarity with qualitative data software programs is a plus);
  • Experience with social network analysis – i.e. UCINET – is a plus;
  • Familiarity with online survey platforms (e.g. SurveyGizmo, Qualtrics);
  • Track record of managing multiple projects concurrently and prioritizing work effectively;
  • Strong writing skills, ability to produce high-quality written products and to edit the writing of other team-members;
  • Commitment to and experience with working with social change/justice organizations; able to build authentic relationships with diverse stakeholders including valuing the insights from people’s lived experience;
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working both independently and collaboratively.
