Equipping nonprofits to advance social change

Announcing New Partnership with the Alliance for Nonprofit Management

Written by Sean Thomas-Breitfeld

The Building Movement Project and the Alliance for Nonprofit Management are excited to announce that we are joining forces to create the “Nonprofits Integrating Community Engagement” project. NICE will work with organizational development experts, consultants and nonprofit staff to help service groups focus on client and community engagement as part of their everyday work.

The project will build on BMP’s decade of work helping organizations integrate a social change perspective into their service delivery. Linda Campbell, who has been instrumental to building BMP’s work with social service agencies, remarked, “I’m excited to have the Alliance for Nonprofit Management support and expand what we’ve learned through our work in Detroit.”

Leveraging the Alliance’s unique role as the premier community of capacity builders for nonprofits, the NICE project will officially launch at the 2014 national conference, being held in Austin this September. John Brothers, the Chair of the Alliance’s Board of Directors, noted that “The title of our conference is ‘Capacity Building for Collective Action’ this year, and the NICE project is a perfect fit for that theme.”

BMP’s Co-Directors presented at the Alliance’s 2013 conference on the 5% Shifts series of reports (watch the video here), and are eager to follow up on that workshop with multiple sessions this year. “The Alliance’s conference is always a great opportunity to learn with and from other thinkers and practitioners in the nonprofit sector,” remarked Frances, “we are thrilled to be partnering with them to ignite a culture shift among service organizations.”

Over the next year, BMP and the Alliance plan to develop training curricula and tools for consultants, intermediaries and nonprofit staff that address how to embed client voice and community engagement as core values and competencies of organizations. Over the longer term, the NICE project intends to spread these values and competencies, and build a community of “evangelists” who will influence these changes in the field.
